The Story

Selene is the most handmade piece in the collection, and the only one where no two examples are identical.

It begins as a flat strip of sterling silver, which a silversmith strikes one blow at a time with a planishing hammer. Each strike leaves a small faceted dent. The dents overlap slightly, and it is that overlap — hundreds of individual facets, each catching light at a slightly different angle — that gives the surface its shimmer.

The two open ends are finished with round freshwater pearls, chosen for lustre rather than perfection. The soft glow of nacre against cold, faceted silver is the contrast this piece is built around: hard and soft, matte and bright, industrial and organic.

Design & Craftsmanship

The cuff is formed over a wooden stake so its curve matches the natural oval of the wrist rather than a perfect circle. That is why it stays put instead of rotating — a round cuff slides, and you spend the day turning it back.

After hammering, the piece is pickled, neutralised and polished only on the high points. This leaves the recesses of the facets slightly darker, which is what makes the texture visible: a fully polished hammered cuff looks flat, and we want the depth to stay.

Both terminals are fitted with smooth bezels and the pearls are seated by hand with a friction fit that allows them to be replaced if they are ever damaged. The gauge is heavy enough to hold its shape once adjusted, and light enough that you stop noticing it within an hour.

How to Wear It

Selene is a one-and-done bracelet — it needs nothing beside it, though it does pair beautifully with the Lumen chain on the other wrist. Slide it on at the narrowest part of the wrist with the gap on the inside, so the pearls frame the underside of the arm.

Because it is adjustable it also sits higher on the forearm on slimmer wrists, which is our favourite way to wear it with short sleeves. It is substantial enough to carry a bare arm on its own in summer, and the hammered surface photographs unusually well in daylight.

Care

Adjust it once, gently, then leave it. Repeated opening and closing will fatigue any metal over time, and a cuff that no longer holds its shape is a cuff you stop wearing.

Pearls are organic: put the cuff on after perfume and hairspray, and wipe the pearls with a damp cloth if they meet cosmetics. Never use silver dip on this piece — it will dissolve the nacre. Store it flat in the supplied pouch.
