The Story

A drop earring lives or dies on movement. Static, it is a piece of metal hanging from an ear. Moving, it is the thing people notice when you turn your head — and that is the only reason to wear one.

Elowen is built around a single stone: a 6 × 3 mm marquise-cut lab-grown teal sapphire, held in a six-prong compass setting at the lobe. Below it hangs a slim 12 mm bar, so the earring has two distinct movements rather than one — the stone catching light at the top, the bar swinging a beat behind it.

The teal is a saturation we spent two seasons developing. Blue enough to read as a sapphire, green enough to warm against rose gold, and never so dark that it loses its fire under evening light. It is grown in a laboratory, which means the same chemistry and crystal structure as a mined sapphire, with cleaner colour and fewer inclusions — and no new mining.

The pair is deliberately not symmetrical in the way you might expect: one bar is pavé-set with a single line of tiny white sapphires, the other is left plain and polished. It is a detail that only becomes visible when you are close, and it keeps the pair from looking manufactured.

Design & Craftsmanship

The marquise is the most demanding of the fancy cuts to set, because both tips are vulnerable. Each stone is held in a compass setting with two V-shaped prongs wrapping over each point and two side prongs securing the belly — the standard protection for a fancy cut, and the reason you can wear these without worrying about a chip.

The ear wire is a fine short bar rather than a hook, so the drop hangs straight instead of leaning. Each bar drop is milled flat rather than cut from round wire, which gives it crisp edges that catch light along their full length instead of a soft blur.

Everything is 18K rose gold vermeil over recycled 925 sterling silver, plated at 2.5 microns. The alloy is deliberately copper-forward, so the blush tone stays true as it ages instead of drifting toward yellow. The pavé line on the left earring is set under magnification in a shared bead of metal, which is the most secure method for stones this small.

How to Wear It

Elowen is an evening earring that happens to work in daylight. Worn with hair up or tucked behind one ear, the drop has room to move and the teal reads clearly; with hair down it becomes a flash of colour at the edge of your face, which is often better.

Keep everything else off the ear — a drop this articulate does not want competition. If you do stack, use a single tiny flat-back stud high in the cartilage and nothing else. Because the metal is rose gold and the stone is cool, these work across a wider range of clothing than a matched gold-and-gold earring would: white, sand, charcoal and navy all sit well beneath them.

Care

Put them in last and take them off first. Remove before swimming, showering, sleeping and sport — a drop earring is the easiest thing in the world to catch on a towel or a jumper, and the bar will bend long before the stone will.

Wipe the pavé line with a soft dry brush rather than a cloth, which snags on prong tips. Store the pair hanging or laid flat in the pouch so the drops cannot tangle around each other. Never use ultrasonic cleaners or chemical dips on vermeil.
